Understanding Disk Space on Your Hosting Plan Print

  • 3

Your hosting account’s Disk Space (or disk quota) is the total amount of server storage allocated to your account.
Unlike local computer storage, web hosting disk space includes more than just your website pages.

What Counts Toward Your Disk Space?

All data stored inside your hosting account counts toward your total quota:

  • Website Files: HTML, PHP, CSS, images, videos, PDF documents, and scripts stored in your public_html directory.

  • Email Accounts: All incoming/outgoing emails, file attachments, Sent items, Drafts, Spam, and Trash folders stored on the server.

  • Databases: MySQL or PostgreSQL databases used by applications like WordPress, Joomla, or e-commerce stores.

  • Backups & Staging Sites: Manual zip backups, old site archives, or development sites stored inside your home directory.

How to Check Your Disk Usage in cPanel

  1. Log in to cPanel.

  2. Check the Statistics bar on the right sidebar for a quick view of your Disk Usage.

  3. For a detailed breakdown, go to Files > Disk Usage.

  4. Scroll down to see which specific folders (e.g., public_html, mail, tmp) consume the most storage.

Tips for Freeing Up Disk Space

If your account is approaching its limit:

  1. Empty Email Trash & Spam: Large attachments in Mail folders often take up significant space. Delete old emails or archive them locally to your PC.

  2. Clear File Manager Trash: Open File Manager, click View Trash, and click Empty Trash.

  3. Remove Old Backups: Download manually generated .zip or .tar.gz backups to your computer and remove them from the server.

What happens if I reach 100% disk usage?

Exceeding your disk quota will prevent new files from being uploaded, stop incoming/outgoing emails, and cause database errors that can temporarily take your website offline.
You can clear space or request a package upgrade from your Client Area.
